Men's File x Clutch Magazine
Časopis Men's File (resp. men's file) vychází již pár let. Prostě skvělý a jedinečný styl. A jedinečný magazín.
Men's File (or men's file) Magazine is now on the market for a few years. According to its founders it still runs on the hobby basis made by part-timers. In our eyes it always looked professionally though. The guys behind the Men's File never knew if the actual issue will be the last one or if there will be the next one. In the original form, the magazine was always about a perfect style, but also about the vintage bikes, cars, bicycles and all the other stuff produced in the past. There was also an article and images of Tatra 87. There were always unique photos which you could never say if they were made yesterday or 50 years ago. Shortly, the amazing and original magazine.
Pár starších čísel Lighting i Clutch máme v našem obchodě k dispozici.
Japanese magazine Clutch is targeted almost the same direction, but the Japanese way. It means, it has a lot of pages and every article is deeply focused on the theme. We can just suggest because there are tons of pictures and all the text are in Japanse. Just the most important texts are translated to English. Actually, only introductions for all the articles are English. The range of Clutch articles is quite broad: vintage clothing, watches, but also kitchen dishes or fishing equipment. If you are not familiar with this kind of magazines you should definitely check it because there is nothing like that on European market and you can have look how these things work in Japan. There is always a part of the magazine dedicated to Japanese vintage clothing shops, more sophisticated versions of second-hand stores. The prices of some unique pieces are quite high for untrained eye: Levi's denim jacket from 20s for circa 4.000 euros or pair of jeans from 1903 with a price tag like a new car. Clutch magazine is a part of the same publishing house like for example Lightning magazine (we wrote an article about that). If you are interested we have some back issues for having a look in the store.
A o čem je toto konkrétní dvojčíslo? Velká část Men's File je věnována různým srazům, např. o celkem známém Wheels&Waves v Biaritzu, o Denim Boulevard v Miláně, o Inspiration L.A. a dalších akcích. Ještě jednou musíme zdůraznit kvalitu a vlastně i krásu všech fotografií, barevných i černobílých.
And what is inside of this special double-issue? Quite a big part of Men's File is focused on different meetings and shows in Europe and US: popular Wheels&Waves in Biaritz, Denim Boulevard in Milan, Inspiration L.A. etc.. There is an article about Rose Bowl market, army leather jackets, woolen blankets Pendleton with Navajo patterns and much much more. We have to point out again that the quality (and actually also the beauty) of all the photos is really high. No matter if black&white or colour.
If we would shortly preview the Clutch part of this double-issue then you can see more clearly the japanese obsession with details as mentioned above. The interview with a founder and a president of The Flat Head company transmuting to an article about which pens and pencils are used by well-known people (Mr. Kobayashi - the mentioned The Flat Head boss, japanese illustrators, Hidehiko Yamane - Evisu boss, Nick Clements - photographer and one of the brave men behind Men's File). The brands and types of pens differs much, from vintage Mont Blanc fountain over Pilot ball pens to simple Staedler pencils. This article has 13 pages. Lots of pages full of japanese vintage shops with an actual offer. There is a big article about Freewheelers M.C. or customised Jaguar E-types. But they write also about mixing coctails, Zippo lighters, making leather jackets, Alden shoes and a small company producing top-notch glasses. There is also an article about National Athletic Goods, which is a brand we carry in Denim Heads too. And you can be sure that there are not so many stores in world having their amazing sweat shirts.
The combination of these two magazines is absolutely unique and can satisfy not only japanese readers. The interesting thing is that the Clutch part can be taken out and you can have two separate magazines. The layout and a quality level of both magazines stays the same (or maybe grows) and we really hope that this collaboration will work in future too. The amount of informations and beautiful images is so high that we can recommend it to anyone. It is quite possible that the value of these magazines will grow over the time, the same way like the price of the stuff they write about.

A to modely Bedale a Beaufort.
The traditional brand Barbour is a part of our business for a couple of years. Now we decided to fulfill the meaning of the word "traditional" and thus there is something new in Denim Heads. We are starting with two most classic pieces: Bedale and Beaufort. For the moment in two green colorways: Olive and Sage.
Opravované a zaplátované bundy nosí i členové britské královské rodiny (např. ZDE článek v Guardianu).
Both jackets show the most essential what Barbour produces for many many years: the durable jackets which last for a very long time. If the jackets get some tears with wear, almost no-one will throw them away, they rather will be repaired and sometimes improved. In these days, when anything broken is given away and replaced it is a bit special. Yes, it is a different case with Barbour jackets. And it is not a mark of savvy owner, it is more a proof of a "relation" which the Barbour owner has to his/her wax jacket. Repaired and sometimes heavily patched Barbour can be seen also on members of Royal family (check this Guardian article).
Perhaps 30 years ago the Barbour jackets were most popular maybe in British countryside and before they were used by motorcyclists or soldiers (check our great article on the history of the brand). Nowadays there are different Barbour collections available. Maybe you mentioned in our store precisely detailed pieces by To-Ki-To or very stylish tops made in collaboration with Saville Row tailors, Norton&Sons. The iconic pieces Bedale and Beaufort win the game on different level. They are classic because of the fabric (we talk about that later), cut, which is not a slim one and also because they are still produced in good ol' England.
The Bedale, or to be precise Classic Bedale, is originally a jacket designed for riding with relaxed fit and a shorter length. The word "Classic" here has nothing to do with heritage but means that the jacket is made of Sylkoil. For this jacket, 6oz Sylkoil is traditional unshorn wax. The cotton comes straight from the loom and is dyed and waxed. The natural imperfections of weave are reflected in the rich variations of colour and finish. This wax is smooth featuring a soft matte texture providing the wearer with more flex.
There are two moleskin-lined handwarmer pockets, two big bellow packets and one inner pocket on the right side (welcome to England). The lining is made of traditional tartan (Original Classic Tartan print) and there is soft but durable corduroy collar. The two-way front zip is reinforced by hardy stud fastenings to seal out wind and rain. The Bedale jacket is compatible with Barbour’s zip-in liners and optional hoods, for all-round versatility. The hoods we have already on stock while the lining will be available in fall.
The Beaufort is a slightly longer than Bedale, the design of the jacket is isnpired by a hunter jacket. It explains the big full-width, lined, rear Game Pocket. Yes, you can use it for a freshly shot duck but more probably it will be used for a newspaper or a small shopping. There are the same features like for Bedale: a massive zipper, optional hood and lining, handwarmer pockets, practical bottom pockets. The Beaufort, first introduced to the range in the 1980s, is finished with the traditional Barbour Thornproof wax, which has a shiny, smooth finish. Thornproof wax is a lustrous wax with a deep colour and even touch. The cotton is calendered between rollers and then dyed. The resulting finish is smooth cotton which we term Thornproof because it is extremely resistant to snags and pulls from spiky plants such as brambles and hawthorn.
The lining is obviously made of tartan. While older Beauforts carry the Dress Gordon tartan, the modern Beaufort is lined with the patented Barbour tartan, which is based on the tartan sett from the Barbour family’s original home county of Ayrshire. There is comfortable corduroy collar which you can close with a flap in case of bad weather. There is a difference in the cuffs. While Bedale has a woolen knitted inner storm cuffs, originally designed to keep the rain from running down your arms as you hold the reins, the Beaufort has Velcro fastening nylon inner cuffs, originally designed to break away when lifting your arms quickly to shoot.
Pro oba typy bund nabízíme i kapuce v přislušném barevném odstínu a materiálu.
We offer the mentioned hoods for both types of jacket (in a proper fabric & color). The both hoods also traditional tartan lining and there is a removable coated wire in brim to hold a semi set position for optimum visibility.
Pokud se bunda dlouholetým používaním jakýmkoliv způsobem poničí, lze ji poslat zpět do Barbouru, kde opraví všechny poškození a vrátí Vám ji do původního stavu.
These iconic jackets are very popular around the world and unlike the colorful outdoor technical jackets, the Barbour looks perfect when wearing suits too. Simply, those are very nice jackets for the members of Royal family and the rock stars alike! In case you will need it (and sooner or later you will) we sell also original Barbour wax which you can later when your jacket will be worn. If the jacket will have some scars or will almost tear apart, we can help you to send it back to Barbour to repair it and get back to great condition. And this is something what differs the Barbour jackets from the rest of the outerwear world. More information you can find everywhere on the web, but we would recommend this article (ok, it's in Czech but there are nice pictures too :)

Music Friday 13.5. SCHOOLBOY Q
Zkrátka země zaslíbená happeningům, jointům i extatickým stavům.
O správném načasování svědčí milióny prodaných desek i zástupy mládeže oblečené do trik s marihuanovým listem. Stačilo by, ale popkulturní kontext vše posunul dál. V nedávné době na pojem cali green zareagovali i legendární turborockeři Gluecifer písní Car Full Of Stash.
Zvlášť, když otevřeně přiznává zkušenost s čerstvě zakoupenou zbraní i svéráznými „kulinářskými" postupy v tracku Hoover Street.

Type A-2 Flight Jacket
While not everyone may like the fact that the production of leather tank top is derived from the follow-up to the meat-processing industry, in terms of not only the result of the fixed part of the wardrobe, but also a very nifty piece of clothing. Its production requires tanned skin of any animal, but most often it comes to steer, pigskin, horse skin, in rare cases then the skin of antelopes and other larger animals. Leather overcoat are most often colored in black, the defaults are different shades of brown, no exception is jackets in the colors more pronounced.

Almost everyone has/had a lether jacket
This type of clothing has been designed as an internal matter (as in many other cases) for the U.S. Army, perhaps to the heroic ethos achieved during the 2nd World War it became quite popular. After the users from the ranks of the police, or military pilots leather, jackets quickly spread among the greasers and bikers. Fashion trend conquered the world and no force still has not been able to stop this since now. This is evidenced by publications such as documentary charting punk, metal, gothic or industrial scene.

Heavily custonised leather jackets are not so uncommon
Nowadays, there are leather armors produced around the world, so you can come across models manufactured by India across Italy and back to North America, from areas sacrificed into meat-processing industry. For those who belong to the animal rights or to the penny-holders guys is existing offer of imitations (the leatherette) from polyurethane or PVC. The cost of these two commodities are obviously incomparable. The look is also a bit different.
Svůj díl popularity sklidily například i v bolševickém Rusku, kde se do nich díky černému svrchníku Jakova Sverdlova halili i další členové Čeky. Klíčovými postavami přerodu kožených svrchníků v módní doplněk se stali bratři Irving a Jack Schottovi, kteří vytvořili ikonické Perfecto v roce 1928. Sedmdesátým létům vládl punk (vzpomeňme například The Ramones), v jehož výbavě rozhodně křivák nemohl chybět, poté štafetu přebral heavy metal s rapem (vzpomeňme např. Run DMC), o něco později se přidal grunge. Dnes už se o pár čísel větší bundy nenosí, v módním pojetí naopak vládne spíše přiléhavost.
The popularity of leather jackets is so specific that forced us to trace where it first appeared quitesence this has wood kind of clothing category. It's the time of the First World War, when the rival powers fighting pilots had to offer functional type of hard wear. The first ever pieces were cut as a bulky jacket with huge lapels for a protection from the weather. Leather jackets a hundred years ago were originally designed for elite pilots and selected members of the military, to the smaller and more elegant design will detours, but being trendy (with some exceptions ) will not be against a proper functional use. From the beginning of its existence the leather jackets were valued for their excellent insulating properties and ability to retain the warm. They were popular, for example, also in Bolshevik Russia, where, thanks to Yakov Sverdlov's black overcoat, there were other members of the Cheka dressed in leather too. The key figures in the transformation of leather overcoats fashion accessory became brothers Irving and Jack Schott, who created the iconic Perfecto jacket in 1928. This jacket is cut from thick leather, adorned with bold studs on the lapels, there is counting of a massive zipper, and it is so robust that it can protect motorcyclists in accidents (well, theoretically). Mecca of film industry named Hollywood received and publicized in the late 20's generally this apparel, but no less a part of popularity has brought by members of motorized gangs of '40s. It is worth to mention that the first vendor became a manufacturer Harley - Davidson! The character of Johnny Strabler's with crook in the movie The Wild One has become a major symbol of the bad guys. However, the story does not end with The Wild One. It continues in a tons of other famous movies. For the youngsters in the '50s and '60s the leather jacket was like a ticket to rebel territory. Through seventies ruled punk (think, for example, The Ramones) in the crooks, that was exactly the equipment you could not live without, then the baton was took over heavy metal across rap (think Run DMC!), a little later added a grunge. Today oversized crooks are not accepted anymore, in fashion concept contrary reigns rather feminine fit.

Lether jackets, denim, boots... you need anything else?
The greatest success of leather jackets is credited mainly to model A-2, very curtly cut and put into the U.S. Army as the successor of A-1 in May 1931. As a zipped jacket with a simple collar, two lower side pockets, epaulets, cuffs and side belts (today more common version with ribbed cuffs and ribbed around the bottom edge). It was made by certified, polished brown horse leather, color range was limited to dark brown (called Seal Brown) and lighter red brown to a lighter brown. Lining, without which the pilots probably would feel the cold, was originally silk, later replaced by cotton due to the unsuitability. Zipper was originally steel or brass, some were nickel-plated, main contractor was the legendary company Talon. These jackets were produced in a relatively wide range of sizes (32 to 54). It allowed pilots to feel (whether it was a navigator or bomb trigger) this classic uniform getting less formal, but still a useful piece of clothing, to which they had a truly personal relationship. Therefore, many of them covered with patches and paintings on the back. Sometimes it incorrectly named as a bomber jacket, but the official name was "summer pilot's jacket".
Z těch nejzásadnějších jmenujme další letecké úpravy D-1, B-3, D-3, G-1 anebo parky B-9 nebo B-11, většina zajistila popularitu právě značce Spiewak a to i během trvání korejské války v 50. letech.
The full use of those jackets was of course limited, but that's another story. Since 1943 they have been replaced slowly by types of B-10 and B-15. Interestingly, some of the pre-war pieces were made from goatskin (as mentioned later Navy G-1 jacket), others from steer hide. When talking about the production of A-2, there are some frequently mentioned companies: Spiewak, Doniger , Bronco, Rough Wear and Aero Leathers. In terms of aesthetics, the first A-2s were the relatively bulky and short jackets that looked pretty awkward as well as non-perfectly fitting. The shoulders fits perfect, maybe that was the reason why this type of jacket didn't lost its popularity so fast. Later it was replaced by the models with better natural (and otherwise) linings and also by thermal models of other leather overcoats. These new styles allowed to wear only the shirt or T-shirt with the flight suit, but allowed the more comfortable carrying out special operations in the air in tight cockpits of airplanes. Among the most famous and popular models were D-1, B-3 , D-3 , G-1 or B-9/B-11, especially the brand Spiewak made a strong position, even during of the Korean War in the '50s.
You may ask whether it is really necessary to wear sometimes up to eight or ten pounds heavy jackets when you can get a lightweight leather tops from nappa or other finely tanned leather. The original intention of producers were also shaping the body of wearer, in the absence of a cult of the body therefore it was a definition of what we now perceive as " cool" thing, which is confirmed by the film's characters of '90s as Tyler Durden (Fight Club) or Neo (Matrix ). That's how's the leather jacket enters the clothing eternity in definitely form.
... to be continued... soon... hopefully ..

Tilak Pountnik - Crafted with Pride in Czech republic
Czech version HERE
We, at Denim Heads, always offer to our customers stuff carefully selected from around the world: japanese denim, american bootsa, swedish flannell shirts, norwegian wool blankets, canadian undershirts, french striped knits, swiss bags, english jackets, danish a belgian biker's fashion and a lots of other things. We have also leather belts, wallets and bags produces by a Czech brand Soxisix. There is a nice demand for their products not only by locals but also from foreign countries. This fact is a proof that it makes sense for people to do what they want and they do not need to do any compromises when choosing a fabric or spend time to craft the products properly. OK, the price can be a bit higher than the price of the crap imported from sweatshops somewhere far away. The best news is that we found something what is comparable (or better) with top quality brands and it yes, it is made in Czech republic. There was always a tradition and high level craftmanship for centuries and it is a shame that it is almost gone because of cheap products from the East. We are really proud that we now carry these exceptional Tilak Poutník jackets in our store.

Unfortunately, the sign "Made in Czech republic" we do not see very often anymore
The Tilak company was founded in 1986 (at those days it was called KAMM Sport). The basic rule of the company is that all the production is placed in Czech republic. Everything is made under one roof directly in the company buildings in Sumperk. Thanks to this rule, there is the best control of all the processes of production and there is always guarantee 4 years. Another benefit for the customer is also non-warranty service. We love all these aspects!

The fit of the jacket is amazing
Tilak is the only manufactory for outdoor clothing based in Czech republic with the official license to work with GORE products (Gore-tex, Windstopper,..), which are obviously one of the best in world. They use also weather resistant Ventile fabric made of 100% cotton (and that is The fabric we are interested in!) or fleece Polartec Powerstrech. More about history eg. here.

The sewing and the overall look is without any imperfections
More about the brand they say on their webpage:
"We are trying to offer you the best quality. It's the point of our work. Without the compromises. The whole production process starts at the design studio Acronym in München. The great attention is paid to the style of products, and the last step is sewing. The unique characteristics of used materials require a well-done making. The production process is finished by the special sticking technology using high temperatures and pressures. The waterproofness of products is tested several times during the day - we have records about each test. The whole process runs in our own factory in Šumperk. All products are improved gradually. We have different kinds of suggestion coming from different kinds of people working on our products or using them, especially from e.g. our customers, professional partners, specialized sellers using our products during the mountains expeditions. The simple resolution motivates us - to be constantly the best. Yes, that is exactly what we love to hear and what works together with our motto: Denim Heads - Only the Best!
The Tilak brand is very well known on the real outdoor market which is not exactly what we do at Denim Heads but there is a special line called Poutník (czech word for pilgrim), resp. Urban Traveler and that is very interesting stuff they make. The garments are not made of GORE-TEX®, but in this case the fabric is Ventile. 100% cotton withou any coating or lamination, just pure cotton. More info on fabric bellow.

The man behind the perfect design is a famous designer, Canadian living in Germany or New York, Errolson Hugh. He founded the Acronym studio focused on Urban Fashion. Errolson gives a special attention to technical details and uses the best fabrics available. Acronym works with such huge brands like Burton or the outdoor garments masters Arc'Teryx. Tilak and Errolson work together since 2002. The fit is adjusted to the main goal of the collection which is the clothing for the city, not the mountains with extreme weather conditions. The fit looks a bit slim and there are lots of details which bring the techniques developed for outdoor. There is a durability against the harsh weather, but with the urban twist. It is maybe not so surprising that this line (Poutnik) came to the market because of the demand from Japan. This line of jackets is in japanese stores only, we are the only exception outside of Japan!
Also the fabric is very special. Ventile®
was the first truly effective all weather fabric whose breathability performance remains unsurpassed. Its secret lies in the uncoated and unlaminated construction. The fabrics are 100% cotton, utilising the finest, long staple fibres, only found in the top 2% of the world's crop. After gentle spinning and doubling, the yarn is woven into a very dense Oxford weave, using up to 30% more yarn than conventional woven fabrics. The performance of Ventile® fabrics results from the properties of cotton fibres which expand when they come into contact with water. The combination of fibres, yarns and weave causes expansion in a uniform manner. This allows the interstices within the fabric to close up, preventing the further passage of water. In addition to this, Ventile is impregnated with a high quality DWR system which enhances the fabrics water resistant properties and increases performance. The fabric therefore provides excellent protection against the wind, rain, snow and cold. But, still, it has a nice feel when you touch it.

The long pedigree of the fabric goes back as far as the late 1930's. With war looming, the British government thought that there would be a shortage of flax that was used in those days for fire hoses and water buckets. An alternative was required and research was commenced into the use of cottons, woven in such a way as to keep water in ! And it worked.
The requirements for research though changed during World War II. Britain depended upon convoys carrying vital supplies, but our Russian convoys across the Arctic Ocean were particularly susceptible to attack from submarines and long - range bombers. Home based RAF fighter escort cover was impossible because of distance.
So, Winston Churchill promoted the concept of catapulting expendable Hurricane aircraft from the decks of merchant ships to provide local cover. There was no means of landing back on the deck. The pilot had the choice of ditching the aircraft or bailing out into the sea. There was no problem in spotting the pilots who had signals and lights, but the water was so cold that life expectancy was only a few minutes. Most died from exposure.
There was an urgent need for a new, protective clothing fabric that would be comfortable in the cockpit under combat conditions and that would also keep a pilot warm and dry in the sea.
After many trials, the scientists at the Shirley Institute in Manchester U.K. developed the fabric called 'Ventile'. When made into finished garments, life expectancy in the sea was extended from a few minutes to 20 minutes and rescue was now a real possibility. 80% of anti-submarine pilots who fell into the sea now survived.
Ventile® fabrics for RAF clothing went into mass production in 1943 and the military association still remains today. Garment designs have changed over the years but you will still find Ventile® suits in modern Tornado jets with the RAF and other NATO airforces.

It is an urban jacket but it has features common in hardcore outdoor garments
Our offer contains of two colourways for jacket (Navy a Olive) and a coat in Navy clour. Like it was said above, there are some unusual technical features which help to keep this jacket very practical but it still looks very good in the city (unlike usual outdoor clothing). There is a hidden hoodie in the collar (for jackets) or removable hoodie (the coat). The 2-way zippers are from YKK. There is also a zippered pocket on the left sleeve on the jackets.
Once again, we have to point out that we are very happy and really proud to carry these amazing garments in our store. The fit, fabric, details and the craftmanship - everything is set to such a high level that we can understand how is it possible for Tilak to be on the special niche market as Japan definitely is. You can try the jackets in out store, or you can order them directly on our webstore.
